Warm Up With These Cozy Holiday Bars In NYC
There’s nothing quite like New York City during the holidays. From sidewalks lined with Christmas tree stands to twinkling lights in every shop window, the city transforms into a truly magical place once December rolls around.
If you’re looking for a place to gather with friends and celebrate the season, you’ll be glad to know that the city is home to all sorts of cozy holiday bars that deck the halls in gorgeous decorations. Whether you’re looking a bar filled with Instagram-worthy Christmas decor, an enchanted winter garden, a rooftop igloo that’s merry and bright, there’s something out there that’s sure to put you in the holiday spirit.
Winter Garden at The Standard
In honor of the winter season, The Standard Hotel, located in the East Village, is transforming its beautiful outdoor space into a winter garden that’s enchanting AF.
Concealed behind an ivy-covered gate, you’ll find a whimsical forest filled with decorated pine trees, sparkly reindeer, twinkling lights and an actual Christmas Tree Market that has Fraiser fur trees for sale by Crest Hardware. For those willing to brave the elements, the garden has several outdoor tables situated under toasty heat lamps.
Or you can seek shelter from the cold by slipping into one of the many yurts nestled between the trees. Inside these tiny heated tents, you’ll find cozy seating arrangements and a faux fireplace as well as a blankets and fur jackets to keep you nice and warm.
In addition to festive surroundings, the winter garden also has a menu full of seasonal bites and boozy delights. You can spend the evening sipping on toasty tipples such as spiked hot cider and whiskey-laden hot cocoa topped with whipped cream. Or, you can celebrate sweater weather season by going all out with a piping hot pot of fondue complete with all the fix-ins, of course.
Just make sure you don’t fill up too much on fondue, because they also have some pretty amazing desserts like fried apple pie and chocolate chip cookies sprinkled with pumpkin seeds. Yum!
If you’re looking to get in on the action, the Winter garden, located at 25 Cooper Square, is open weekdays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends, 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. through March 3, 2018.
Rolf’s German Restaurant
When it comes to decking the halls in boughs of holiday, Rolf’s German Restaurant does not mess around. Starting in September each year, the quaint in Gramercy joint undergoes an epic transformation into an all-out winter wonderland.
Take one step inside and you’ll quickly discover why this festive spot has become an Instagram sensation for both tourists and locals alike. Every square-inch of this restaurant is covered in a thick layer of Christmas paraphernalia that serves as the perfect backdrop for your holiday selfies. No really, I’m not kidding. These decorations are so intense, they basically put the Rockefeller Christmas tree to shame.
If you’re wondering what goes into a merry makeover of this caliber, it apparently takes a team of six men about a month and a half to hang up the 15,000 ornaments,100,000 lights and endless yards of garland that envelope this place.
Since German food happens to be one of my weaknesses, we decided to grab a bite to eat while admiring the festive AF surroundings. After looking over the menu, we decided to go with the essentials: potato pancakes, sausage and schnitzel.
To be completely honest, the food here is nothing special. But then again, I guess you don’t need amazing cuisine to keep people coming in the door when you have decorations like this. That being said, I would probably just recommend coming here for drinks.
If you’re looking for something festive to sip on, Rolf’s has small selection of holiday cocktails, like mulled wine, spiked cider and boozy eggnog. Or you can opt for a giant mug of German beer that’s sure to put you in a merry mood.
Like most Instagram-worthy places in New York City, Rolf’s tends to get crowded as all hell during the holiday season. On most December days, there’s a line out the door to get into this place and experience the Christmas spectacular that is Rolf’s. So if you want to snag the ultimate Christmas selfie, you’ll have to plan accordingly,
Your best bet is to head over to Rolf’s early and claim your spot in line before the restaurant opens at noon. If lines and hordes of people aren’t your thing, you might be better off waiting until after the holidays to hit up Rolf’s. The restaurant doesn’t take its decorations down until the spring, so you can stop by in mid-January for a dose of Christmas cheer without the crowds.
Rolf’s German Restaurant is located at 281 3rd Avenue and is open from 12 PM to 10 PM daily.
Winter Igloos at 230 Fifth Rooftop
If you’re looking for seasonal booze with spectacular views of the city, 230 Fifth has you covered. The popular Flatiron rooftop bar just transformed their outdoor space into a winter wonderland complete with twinkling lights and awesome igloos.
These clear, bubble tent igloos are the perfect way to stay cozy while enjoying a prime view of the Empire State building and the surrounding city skyline. If you need a little extra warmth, you’ll be glad to know that 230 Fifth has a bunch of fluffy, red robes on hand to keep you nice and toasty.
In addition to festive holiday decorations, 230 Fifth will be serving up seasonal sips such as spiced Whiskey martinis, boozy hot cocoa and Fireball spiked apple cider. The igloos, which can hold up to 12 people, are available on a first-come first-serve basis until late April. 230 Fifth is located at 230 Fifth Avenue and is open from 2 PM to 4 AM on weekdays and 10 AM to 4 AM on weekends.
